disengaging/self-preservation

Excerpts from Private Practice:

Sam: I'd like to think that pain is what forces us to grow.
Violet: Then maybe I don't want to grow.

Maybe I don't want to grow. Maybe I want to, but I'm scared. I think you're scared too. So we choose to stay on safe ground because we're too weak. Can you not be weak for once?

But whatever you do, you still paint that smile on me. Please remind me that I always have a choice. I need to disengage.

"Sometimes you have to tell yourself to disengage, to not be involved."
